Alserkal Avenue

Opening Time: 10:00 Am – 7:00 Pm (Sun-Sat)

Alserkal Avenue, Dubai

Alserkal Avenue is an industrial compound hosting warehouses in the industrial zone of Al Quoz, in Dubai. The area is an arts and culture district for Dubai with a lineup of galleries, facilities, and platforms, such as Alserkal Avenue that houses residencies for local and global artists.

In March 2017, Alserkal Avenue inaugurated Concrete (Alserkal Avenue), its new space in the Avenue and the first project to be completed in the United Arab Emirates by the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), founded by Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate Rem Koolhaas. Originally an industrial area consisting of thirty-nine warehouses, the district evolved naturally, with the first contemporary art gallery, Ayyam Gallery, moving into the district in 2008. The original warehouses have since been converted into art galleries, design studios, a private museum, and a performing arts space. After Carbon 12 Dubai, one of the most active contemporary art galleries of the region, moved to Alserkal Avenue in October 2009, other modern art galleries followed, and the industrial compound’s function evolved to become a “focal point of artistic activity.” Alserkal Avenue is now a mix of industrial business and creative spaces. It now houses more than 60 art, design, and creative venues that include foundations, private collections, and community projects. It is home to twenty-five contemporary art galleries and art spaces in a one-block radius, the highest concentration of art galleries in one area in the region.

Courtyard

Opening Time: 8:00 Am – 7:00 Pm (Sun-Sat)

Courtyard, Dubai

The Courtyard is located in the Al Quoz Industrial area of Dubai. The Courtyard houses an art gallery, a theatre with a 70-seat capacity, a coffee & juice bar, an incubator business center, a bistro, a flower boutique, unique home accessories and gift shop, printing, film, and photography studios, and spaces for interior designers and artists.

Al Quoz is home to numerous factories and workshops. Since the opening of the Courtyard in 1998, the area has changed significantly and many galleries and art studios have now established themselves here or relocated to the neighborhood, which has flourished in recent years to become an artistic and cultural hub. The Courtyard’s concept was to create a viable multidisciplinary community center, which could house a variety of functions, exhibitions, and cultural activities in a city that is home to many different nationalities and ethnic backgrounds. It was created to be a place for people to meet, interact and learn about each other while engaging in art and culture. Two gates face two main roads, and between them a long courtyard flanked on either side by ten buildings with different facades, showcasing the architecture of the Gulf. This makes up the core of the Courtyard. The buildings themselves are composed of numerous other components salvaged over the last 25 years by the architect, Dariush Zandi from around the UAE and the Gulf, now cleverly repurposed and perfectly preserved in their new home. The Courtyard narrates the story of Dubai itself, its society, and its culture in an abstract language created by inspirational architecture gated by façades of steel and glass. The Courtyard seeks to act as an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and provide a gateway to art and culture.
